Home improvement can be messy business. A batten board is nothing more than a 1 x4 or 1 x2 board screwed directly into the wall horizontally. Mortar a small spot and then place a tile. And that works fine if the base of the wall usually the floor or bathtub is perfectly flat and level.

In high traffic areas porcelain floor tile is an excellent choice and will out perform other tiles in both long term appearance and durability. Cleaning porcelain tile is a breeze. Test a tile to make sure the mortar is mixed and spread correctly. This surface will be the foundation which holds your beautiful backsplash together over the years and a crumbling foundation will shorten the lifespan.

So if you re dealing with four inch tiles your batten board would start three inches off the floor. Add tile spacers for help keeping the tile pieces lined up. You probably know that ceramic tile is available in lots of sizes all the way from 1 square inch usually sold attached to sheets that are 12x12 inches all the way up to 18 inches. Hold the trowel at about a 45 degree angle from the wall.

This will create the necessary ridges in the adhesive to allow for the tile to stick to the wall. Place the mosaic sheets along the wall. I wipe down the walls often especially behind the sink and there are only a few areas where corners of the tiles are peeling up. Move the trowel horizontally across the wall to make the grooves applying consistent pressure as you spread.
